New Canadian Standards Association Z662 Standard

Basis for Issuance

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) recently published and released to the general public CSA Z662:23, the latest version of CSA Z662, Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems.

Background

Pursuant to provisions of Section 4 and Paragraph 4(1)(d) of the Canadian Energy Regulator Onshore Pipeline Regulations, the latest version of this standard is incorporated by reference into the regulations and came into force as of the date of publication and release to the public, 30 June 2023.

CER Expectations

There are significant changes and additions to the standard, including a new clause on hydrogen and hydrogen blend pipeline systems. The CER expects companies to review CSA Z662:23 and take the necessary steps to ensure compliance with its provisions as soon as possible.

The CER also expects companies to comply with Order MO-015-2023 [Filing C25215] and the requirements related to the use of the new Safety Class method contained within CSA Z662:23.

For applications currently before the Commission, companies will be expected to provide further information on how the project will comply with CSA Z662:23.
