Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples
We are working to transform the way we work with Indigenous Peoples, recognizing their unique cultures, knowledge and histories.
We are training our employees to understand more about Indigenous history, culture and contemporary issues facing Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
We are thinking about the impact our work has on Indigenous rights and including Indigenous knowledge when we make our decisions.
We are meeting with Indigenous Communities that could be impacted by an energy project earlier to better understand their concerns.
We are making it easier for Indigenous Peoples to participate in our hearings in ways that work best for them.
We are working to expand the use of Indigenous Monitors so projects can benefit from Indigenous knowledge when they are being built and operated.
The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) is committed to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities makes us a better regulator by supporting better decisions, improved safety and environmental protection, and effective issue resolution.
We are proud to play a leading role in the Government of Canada’s efforts to advance reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples by directly involving First Nations, Metis and Inuit in our decision-making and oversight activities.
We acknowledge the inseparable connection Indigenous Peoples have with the land and the water. A shared cultural awareness is key to establishing strong and trusting relationships. It is only through these relationships that we can co-develop approaches that work for everyone.
We know we have much more to learn from First Peoples of Canada.
Developing an Indigenous Advisory Committee
We are establishing an Indigenous Advisory Committee (IAC) at the Canada Energy Regulator. The IAC will represent First Nations, Inuit, and Metis interests. The Committee will provide advice on how the CER can better build relationships with Indigenous Peoples in Canada, address issues, and incorporate Indigenous perspectives in our work.
The IAC will help our organization learn directly from Indigenous People in Canada and advise on how we can enhance Indigenous involvement in our oversight of energy projects to keep people safe and protect the environment.
Building Cultural Diversity
We believe diversity makes us better at the work we do. We are training our employees to effectively understand and work with people of different cultural backgrounds and experiences.
We also want Indigenous Peoples to be represented at all levels and in all areas of the CER. That is why we have set clear goals to become a more inclusive and diverse energy regulator. We will continue working hard to become an employer of choice for Indigenous People in Canada.
We know we have much more to learn from Canada’s First Nations, Metis and Inuit.
Meaningful engagement with Indigenous Peoples will help us become a better regulator for all people in Canada.
We will continue our journey towards reconciliation through open dialogue, sharing perspectives, collaboration and co-development.
