Stakeholder Engagement
The NEB uses a regional and community approach to engage with stakeholders to build awareness, confidence and responsiveness in the NEB and NEB regulatory processes. The NEB engages with landowners, municipalities and other orders of government, industry, non-governmental organizations, and others. The view and insights we gain informs improvements to NEB regulatory practices, processes and information materials.

Municipal Roundtables – Dialogue about Energy
The NEB, through feedback from regional stakeholders, is developing better mechanisms for proactive, ongoing dialogue on issues of common interest between industry and municipalities impacted by existing energy infrastructure.
In 2017-18, the NEB, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and Canadian Energy Pipeline Association established a Municipal Roundtable. The goal of the Roundtable is to identify areas of common concern related to pipeline operations or activities, and to support systemic solutions to issues. Stronger communication and collaboration between Municipalities, the NEB and the pipeline sector will drive better public awareness, emergency management, municipal planning and pipeline development regulations in the future.
Number of meetings by the Land Matters Group Steering Committee, to monitor our work with members of the public and industry who have vested interests in land matters to support continual improvement in the development of the NEB’s regulatory approach to land matters.

Understanding federal regulations at a local level
The NEB’s Vancouver Regional Office engaged extensively with five Vancouver Lower Mainland municipalities and NEB-regulated companies during 2017, to discuss and create mutual understanding of the new 2016 Damage Prevention Regulations, particularly for municipal operations and maintenance activities around NEB-regulated pipelines. Through meaningful dialogue and cooperative efforts, this work generated an NEB guidance document for all municipalities and NEB-regulated companies across Canada.
