Trans Mountain removes fish spawning deterrents

December 19, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta – National Energy Board

The National Energy Board (NEB) confirms that as of December 12, 2017, the last of the fish spawning deterrent mats installed by Trans Mountain Pipeline ULC (Trans Mountain) in several streams in British Columbia earlier this year have now been removed.

NEB Inspection Officers were onsite in November and December to inspect Trans Mountain’s compliance with the NEB’s requirement that the spawning deterrents be removed in accordance with the company’s commitments. The deterrents were removed after all spawning activity at the sites had concluded for the year.

Trans Mountain is required to monitor the effectiveness of the deterrents that were installed.

The NEB inspection reports related to the spawning deterrents will be posted to the Compliance and Enforcement page of our website when available.

Further enforcement action related to the unauthorized activity remains under consideration by the NEB.

The NEB directed Trans Mountain on September 22, 2017 to cease further installation of spawning deterrents along the planned route of the new pipeline.
