CER releases Industry Best Practices for Involvement of Indigenous Nations and Communities in Emergency Management

We released Industry Best Practices for Involvement of Indigenous Nations and Communities in Emergency Management. The best practices document informs CER-regulated companies on how to enhance Indigenous Nations’ and communities’ involvement in their Emergency Management Programs. We expect companies to start implementing them as soon as practical. Indigenous Nations and communities have an important role in emergency management. Their involvement helps improve safety for their members and can mitigate potential impacts on the environment and Indigenous sites of significance.

We created the best practices document in response to feedback from Indigenous Peoples across Canada on how they want to be involved in an emergency. We intend to incorporate the best practices into our regulatory framework. This initiative is also part of what we would like your feedback on in Phase 2 Engagement for the Onshore Pipeline Regulations and Filing Manuals Review Project.

Our organization is committed to Reconciliation, and the best practices document provides more opportunities for us and CER-regulated companies to foster stronger relationships with Indigenous Peoples. We are working to enhance the involvement of Indigenous Peoples in how we implement our mandate, recognizing their unique cultures, knowledge and histories.
